Aquaponics Research Intern for Undergraduates

Position Overview
The Aquaponics Research Intern for Undergraduates will engage in the daily management of the aquaponics systems at the University and contribute to research initiatives supported by a Mini NASA Grant from the Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium (PSGC) focused on sustainable food production. Responsibilities include system upkeep, such as planting and harvesting crops, managing fish populations, maintaining records, and ensuring cleanliness of the facilities. Research tasks will involve aiding in experimental setups and gathering data. All activities will be conducted under the supervision of aquaponics faculty and staff. This internship is designed for a semester, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.

Work Schedule
The role requires morning hours for greenhouse tasks, while additional hours will be arranged according to the intern's schedule and the needs of the aquaponics systems and research projects, which may include weekends. An average commitment of 10 hours per week is anticipated.

Position Requirements
Applicants should submit a resume/CV, an unofficial transcript, and a brief statement of interest. Preference will be given to students pursuing degrees in environmental science, integrative sciences, or biotechnology, although candidates from other disciplines may be considered. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Completed laboratory courses in biology and chemistry.
  • A keen interest in future research or career opportunities in controlled environment agriculture or related fields.
  • A strong work ethic, dedication, attention to detail, self-motivation, and a positive demeanor.
  • A passion for working in greenhouse and laboratory settings.
  • The ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively within a team.
  • Personal transportation to the greenhouse site, with public transport options available nearby.

Physical Requirements
Candidates must be capable of operating aquaponics systems and machinery, as well as handling necessary chemicals for equipment maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
The intern will be tasked with:

  • Seeding, transplanting, harvesting, and packaging various crop species.
  • Managing fish populations and harvesting them upon maturity.
  • Conducting water quality assessments.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of activities.
  • Cleaning and maintaining the facilities.
  • Assisting with educational programming and summer camps.
  • Supporting ongoing research initiatives.
  • Adhering to lab safety protocols.

All responsibilities must be performed in compliance with university policies and applicable safety regulations.
