Position Overview

The Global Streaming Technology group is seeking a talented Principal Engineer to enhance our Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) portfolio, which includes renowned brands such as Peacock, NOW, Fandango, SkyShowtime, Showmax, and TV Everywhere, serving streaming audiences in over 70 countries. This role is pivotal in driving the development and execution of engineering initiatives within the Video on Demand (VOD) team.

As a key technical leader, you will tackle intricate technical challenges, mentor junior engineers, and foster collaboration across teams. Your responsibilities will include ensuring that all backend systems meet quality standards, performance metrics, and key performance indicators (KPIs). You will be part of a dedicated team that develops and maintains applications across various platforms, delivering video content and metadata to millions of users.

The VOD Engineering team utilizes state-of-the-art technology to create services that enhance user experience. We are in search of a proactive team member who takes ownership, is accountable, and possesses a passion for technology. You will collaborate with quality assurance professionals, providing guidance to ensure that the quality of deliverables meets the high standards expected by the Peacock team. Your role will involve comprehensive testing of all product outputs, employing various methodologies including automation, manual testing, regression, and testing of incremental features across different platforms.

Team Responsibilities
  • Develop end-to-end video on demand solutions.
  • Manage the automated media pipeline for content delivery to NBCU's streaming platforms.
  • Address and resolve issues within the VOD pipeline.
  • Configure video, audio, and subtitle encoding for multi-platform delivery.
  • Explore new technologies in the media sector and conduct proof of concepts.
  • Collaborate with Operations and client teams to drive enhancements in video delivery.
Key Responsibilities
  • Define the technical vision and make strategic decisions regarding system architecture and implementation.
  • Contribute to the design and architecture of video encoding and packaging solutions.
  • Ensure that requirements and designs prioritize resiliency, reliability, and observability.
  • Utilize tools to visually represent end-to-end component infrastructure in detail.
  • Create, document, and update media workflow diagrams.
  • Review requirements and specifications, translating them into test cases for both manual and automated workflows.
  • Drive innovation by researching and adopting new technologies and methodologies.
  • Lead code reviews to maintain high standards of code quality.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering, software architecture, and design.
  • Extensive knowledge of video workflows, codecs, DRM, encoding, and packaging technologies including CMAF, HEVC, UHD, HDR, ABR, HLS, and DASH.
  • Strong familiarity with cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Understanding of OTT streaming protocols like CMAF, HLS, and DASH.
  • A commitment to quality in all tasks, regardless of size.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
