Job Summary

The Dental Care Specialist will provide dental services to inmate patients, adhering to the security regulations of the assigned institution. The specialist will document services provided to the director or designee to ensure compliance with client contracts.

Requirements
  • Education: A graduate of an accredited school of dental medicine.
  • Experience: One year of experience in general dentistry is preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Current licensure as a dentist within the state of employment is required. CPR certification must also be obtained and maintained.
Key Responsibilities
  • Examine, supervise, and provide dental care/treatment to referred patients.
  • Utilize standard precautions when providing dental care and treatment.
  • Evaluate patient dental care required or administered, dental operatory conditions, and equipment in use.
  • Evaluate patients needing or applying for dental care not included under basic health care services and make clinically appropriate recommendations.
  • Function as a consultant to the staff health care provider, if needed.
  • Monitor the need for dental supplies and equipment.
  • Perform routine cleaning, restorative dentistry, and extraction of teeth in accordance with dental policies.
  • Perform dental examinations in accordance with facility requirements.
  • Take impressions for dental appliances, if indicated, and send prosthesis to outside dental labs.
  • Instruct patients in good dental hygiene techniques.
  • Ensure progress note documentation is in SOAP format, problem-oriented, legible, and dated, timed, and signed.
  • Keep patient information confidential and respect patients' rights to privacy, in accordance with accepted confidentiality practices for incarcerated individuals.
  • Provide in-service training for health staff members on appropriate issues such as dental hygiene, dental care, dental emergencies, and techniques.
  • Provide input into facility mandatory committees, when requested, such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Infection Control, Quality Improvement, and Medical Audit Committee.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must obtain and maintain security clearance.
  • Must maintain privileges.
  • Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  • Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  • Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  • Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
