Job Summary:

The Senior Firmware Development Manager is responsible for leading the development of embedded firmware for various products. This includes the design, implementation, and testing of operating software, utility software, development software, and diagnostic software.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance and oversight to firmware engineers and technicians working on specific projects or tasks.
  • Firmware Development: Design, modify, and maintain firmware for new and existing products, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company requirements.
  • Schedule Management: Develop and monitor schedules for firmware development and revisions, ensuring timely delivery and quality standards.
  • Programming Expertise: Write programs in C/C++ and other high-level programming languages, and assist in establishing programming standards and best practices.
  • Tool Selection: Identify and justify the use of software development tools, including assemblers, compilers, and emulators.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with Design Engineers and Project Leaders in the development of new or revised designs, and assist in defining software requirements, objectives, and modules.
  • Embedded Architecture: Help develop new embedded architectures, security features, and driver-level firmware, and participate in or assist others with software testing or setting software testing standards.
  • Customer Interaction: Work with customers and users to define software operating requirements and troubleshoot/debug existing issues, including travel when necessary.
  • Training and Support: Provide training on the operation of new or updated designs, and support Technical Writers in developing manuals and documentation related to software.
  • Standards Development: Develop or direct device communication standards, software programs, and hardware requirements, and estimate engineering effort and material costs for jobs or proposals.

Requirements:

  • Education: BS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with at least 6 years of firmware design experience preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in version control tools such as SVN or Git, working knowledge of the Linux operating system, networking, and multithreaded execution systems, proficiency in C/C++ and object-oriented programming, experience with communication hardware, including Ethernet, USB, I2C, and SPI, familiarity with electrical test equipment, such as oscilloscopes and multimeters, experience with embedded microcontroller systems, familiarity with XML and JSON schema, experience with third-party code integration, and strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to exchange detailed information and explain technical details to customers and team members, and willingness to travel as needed for training, project support, and design-related activities.
