Airport Operations Technician

GENERAL PURPOSE

To execute a comprehensive range of maintenance tasks both landside and airside; conducts preventive upkeep and repairs on diverse machinery and equipment, ensuring smooth, safe, and efficient operations.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No supervisory duties are assigned to this position.

CORE COMPETENCIES:


Manages airside and landside grounds by ensuring all areas are properly maintained, including mowing, edging, and landscaping; ensures functionality and upkeep of all irrigation and watering systems.

Ensures that herbicide and pesticide applications are conducted safely and in accordance with regulatory policies.

Maintains the structural integrity of airport buildings and surrounding support facilities.

Undertakes a variety of indoor and outdoor semi-skilled construction and maintenance projects as required.

These projects encompass repairs such as painting, flooring, plumbing, roofing, electrical work, carpentry, mechanical tasks, concrete work, horticulture, earthwork, and pavement maintenance, including asphalt and concrete repairs.

Assists in managing inventory and procurement necessary for facility operations.

Oversees preventive maintenance of all equipment and performs repairs as necessary.

Conducts airfield inspections in compliance with federal regulations, documenting discrepancies and determining appropriate corrective actions. Executes necessary maintenance to rectify identified airfield issues.

Performs both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on airside pavements.

Maintains and monitors airfield grounds and aircraft movement areas to adhere to safety regulations.

Utilizes Airport Operations, VHF, and administrative radio systems in accordance with communication procedures.

Responds to aviation-related emergencies following the Airport Emergency Plan. Assesses situations, determines the appropriate checklist procedures, and initiates actions as directed by a supervisor.

Oversees security inspections of perimeter, airfield, and terminal fencing and gates to ensure compliance with security regulations.

May participate in various employee committees as assigned.

May represent the organization at conferences, seminars, and meetings.

May assist in moving and setting up furniture, tables, and chairs as required.


Adheres to the designated work schedule as outlined in departmental policies; ensures compliance with personnel rules and regulations; maintains a valid driver's license as required, adhering to driving policies accordingly.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required,
Two (2) years of Electrical/HVAC experience, and
One (1) year of Mechanical/Welding experience, and
One (1) year of Building Maintenance experience, and
Six (6) months of Grounds Maintenance experience, or
Equivalent education or certifications for each area.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively and receive instructions via mobile radios from tower operations.
Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.
Ability to foster effective working relationships.
Ability to safely and properly utilize equipment and tools.
Ability to work independently and complete daily tasks according to the work schedule.
Ability to lift heavy objects and stand or walk for extended periods.
Ability to operate small farm tractors with large mowing attachments.
Ability to patch, repair, tape, and texture drywall professionally.
Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in maintenance operations.
Ability to diagnose issues and perform quality repairs on small engines (e.g., landscaping equipment).

Skills in operating tools and equipment, managing basic office correspondence, and employing time management techniques, along with proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Familiarity with equipment and supplies for minor repairs.
Some knowledge of first aid and safety precautions, as well as lock-out/tag-out procedures.
Skills in welding (Arc and MIG).
Ability to perform quality minor plumbing repairs and clear drain lines using a sewer auger.
Ability to safely operate gas-powered landscaping equipment (trimmers, chainsaws, weed eaters, etc.).
Ability to read and understand construction drawings.
Ability to safely test and troubleshoot 120V and 240V circuits and electrical equipment.
Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee must possess a valid driver's license by the date of hire and comply with driving policies.

Must obtain an Herbicide Applicator's License within one (1) year of notification.
May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
Will be required to perform on-call responsibilities.
Must pass a criminal history and background check prior to hiring.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Tractors, mowers, runway sweepers, trucks, pesticide applicators, chemical protective gear, welders, steam cleaners, portable heaters, standby/portable generators, automatic gates, pavement striping equipment, pavement sealing equipment, edgers, weed-eaters, blowers, ladders/hydraulic lift equipment, blade and scoop equipment, glycol recovery equipment, fire extinguishers, assorted power/hydraulic tools, computers, and various other equipment or systems.
