Job Summary:
The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing safety and health programs within the day-to-day operations of NRG Energy, with a focus on injury prevention and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Influence and motivate employees to work in a safe manner and communicate safety requirements to all staff.
- Coordinate and implement compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Implement the Company's Safety and Health Management program, ensuring all items are compliant with OSHA standards and other regulatory agencies.
- Coordinate with management on regulatory interpretation, timely internal and external reporting, and overall safety and health compliance.
- Conduct internal safety and health audits and incremental inspections of facilities to ensure compliance.
- Investigate causes of accidents and incidents, making recommendations to prevent recurrences.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs, design improvements, and work with management to implement identified improvements.
- Evaluate, develop, and assist with delivering training programs to improve skills in the safety aspects of employees' jobs.
Working Conditions:
- Office and power plant environments.
- Normal office environment and/or outdoor work environment, including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas.
- Willingness to work outside normal business hours as necessary, especially during critical issue resolution and to achieve project milestones.
- Occasional travel required.
- Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.).
- May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals, and hot equipment/environments.
- Requires operation of a personal computer.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of five years full-time safety experience. In lieu of five years safety experience, ten years industry-related experience with safety responsibilities may be considered.
- Certified Safety Professional, Occupational Health and Safety Technologist, or Certified Industrial Hygienist, or ability to become certified.
- Must have a valid state driver's license.
- The position is a DOT PHMSA covered position and requires the successful candidate to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and drug and alcohol testing background check, and once placed will be a participant in the NRG DOT Program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous power plant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Safety and Health or related discipline.
- SGE (Special Government Employee Program) experience in site audits.
- VPP (Voluntary Protection Program) champion.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
- Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements, including MSHA regulations.
- Understanding of Process Safety Management requirements according to OSHA 29 CFR.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of OSHA's electrical generation and power distribution standard.
- Must possess functional computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to run a functional safety committee/sub-committee with agendas, meeting minutes, and a charter.
- Ability to speak in front of large groups effectively.
- Basic understanding of occupational health and industrial hygiene principles.
- Ability to positively interact with regulatory agencies.
- Ability to interact effectively in a team environment and with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to compile, analyze, and interpret data.
- An understanding of the factors that influence human behavior.
- Ability to conduct incident analyses.
- Ability to prioritize tasks within a fast-paced dynamic environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, pull/push, and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Perform work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in adverse conditions.
- Wear job-related personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Occasionally work at heights and enter enclosed vessels or confined spaces.
