Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

Join the City of Altamonte Springs, FL team as a Heavy Equipment Operator and contribute to the city's construction and infrastructure maintenance needs.

Job Summary:

The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate medium to heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, dump trucks, forklifts, and other machinery, to support the city's construction and infrastructure maintenance projects. The ideal candidate will have experience operating heavy equipment, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring equipment is clean and in good repair.

Responsibilities:
  • Operate medium to heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, dump trucks, forklifts, and other machinery, to support the city's construction and infrastructure maintenance projects.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, including daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, to ensure equipment is clean and in good repair.
  • Haul sweeper and C&D debris to the Seminole County transfer station and landfill.
  • Transport equipment to and from the job site and to the City garage on trailers.
  • Installation and maintenance of drainage structures, including cleaning of swales and ponds using heavy equipment and installation of pipe.
  • Assist and support other sections, divisions, and departments for City events, including Spring Clean-up, Red Hot & Boom, and foot races.
  • Support and assist Divisional crews in their construction and equipment needs, including performing concrete, asphalt, and brick repairs.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential and may be required to perform duties outside of their normal job description.
  • Complete required trainings as specified within the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.
  • Must be available for emergency call-outs and on-call duty. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Heavy Equipment Operator I:
      • One (1) year of experience operating medium to heavy equipment in a utility construction field, to include experience in repair and preventative maintenance of heavy equipment.
      • Valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL). Must obtain a State of Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator II:
    • Three (3) years of experience operating medium to heavy equipment in a utility construction field, to include experience in repair and preventative maintenance of heavy equipment.
    • Valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with tanker endorsement. Must obtain a State of Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.
PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certified Stormwater Management Inspector (erosion & sediment control). Must obtain within one (1) year of date of hire.
  • Obtain and maintain FDOT TTC/MOT Certification. Must obtain within one (1) year of date of hire.
  • FSA Stormwater Operator Level 1. Must obtain within one (1) year of date of hire.
Supplemental Information:

Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure & Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement, and a criminal background screening. Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving-related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI), which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12). Position is considered at-risk for exposure to Hepatitis B during performance of regular duties. An acceptance/declination of vaccination form is required. If selected, an essential functions assessment is required to measure the ability to safely perform the required physical demands. This position is covered under the D.O.T. regulations for pre-employment drug testing and inquiries.
