Certified Histology Technician

Overview:
The Registered Histologist plays a vital role in the preparation and analysis of human tissue specimens, contributing to the understanding of tissue and organ function, as well as the diagnosis and progression of diseases, while adhering to established protocols and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates proficiency in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Collects, processes, and stores surgical and cytological specimens efficiently.
• Inputs patient data, orders, and technical details into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); organizes and prints cassettes.
• Prepares specimens, slides, and blocks for external referrals.
• Manages the referral log, processes reports, and monitors pending tasks.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization in the grossing area, frozen section room, and autopsy suite, including supply stocking and solution preparation.
• Executes technical procedures to create high-quality microscopic slide preparations.
• Adheres to turnaround time (TAT) guidelines while performing routine and specialized stains for microscopic evaluation of various specimens.
• Operates essential laboratory equipment, including microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, and staining devices, ensuring quality slide production for pathologist assessments.
• Utilizes Immunostainers to produce diagnostic immunostains.
• Conducts manual staining as necessary to ensure quality diagnostic results.
• Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsy procedures.
• Engages in Quality Control and Improvement activities, documenting results according to established policies and procedures in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission standards.
• Performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, ordering supplies and reagents as needed, while adhering to safety protocols.
• Participates in ongoing education and development, attending a minimum of 10-12 in-house educational programs annually and training new staff.
• Completes assigned tasks and special projects within designated timeframes as requested by supervisory personnel.
• Complies with all relevant accreditation standards and prepares for inspections as required.
• Observes established safety protocols, infection control measures, and compliance guidelines in the handling of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
Education and Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Completion of an accredited Histotechnology Program recognized by CAHEA/NAACLS or military equivalent is required.
- Successful completion of the core educational curriculum "Excellence at the Front End" is required within the first year of employment.
Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in histopathology is required along with a High School Diploma.
- At least 1 year of experience in histopathology is required along with an Associate's degree.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Certification as a Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) is preferred.
- Histotechnology certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is preferred.
