Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Veterinarian to join our team at Stony Brook University. As a Clinical Veterinarian, you will be responsible for providing veterinary care for a wide variety of species of animals used in biomedical research programs. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring the health and well-being of these animals, and your contributions will play a critical role in advancing scientific research.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide veterinary care for laboratory animals, including diagnosis and treatment of diseases
Participate in health surveillance, environmental enrichment, and preventative medicine programs
Consult with investigators on animal models, anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia
Conduct routine veterinary rounds, including monitoring transgenic, SCID, knockout, and athymic mouse colonies
Perform euthanasia, routine gross necropsy, sample collections, and microscopic evaluations
Provide holiday, weekend, and night emergency on-call duty

Additional Responsibilities:

Develop and oversee pre-anesthesia, anesthesia, and anesthesia monitoring of large and small animal species
Develop surgical animal models and perform experimental surgery as needed
Provide post-procedural care for large and small animal species
Manage the veterinary core facilities/services, including special veterinary technical services
Coordinate provision of services, including blood collection, antibody production, and animal identification
Oversee the recharge mechanism for services

Teaching and Training:

Assist in overseeing a web-based training program for research investigators
Provide monthly orientation sessions for new animal users
Provide didactic and hands-on instruction for DLAR technical staff, veterinary technicians, and research staff members

IACUC Responsibilities:

Pre-review animal care and use protocols prior to submission to the IACUC
Consult with investigators on animal models, anesthetics, analgesics, procedures, and euthanasia techniques
Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, including protocol review, biannual facility site inspections, and site inspections of laboratories

Contract Projects:

Coordinate all veterinary and regulatory aspects of contract projects, in conjunction with the Director
Ensure conformance to GLP standards as applicable

Research Opportunities:

Collaborate in research in laboratory animal medicine or other health science-related fields
Other duties or projects as assigned, appropriate to rank and departmental mission

Requirements:

DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited institution and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S.
One year of experience in a laboratory animal facility and/or clinical practice
American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility
Experience serving on animal facility regulatory committees (IACUC, IBC)
Supervisory experience

What We Offer:

Competitive salary range: $130,000-$150,000
$3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly
Full-time appointment, FLSA Exempt position
Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption
Evening and weekend work will be required at times

This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
