Job Overview

The Charge Nurse is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to nursing staff, ensuring the safety and well-being of all patients. This role includes delivering direct nursing care as needed, particularly for patients requiring rehabilitation services across various age groups. The Charge Nurse will assess patient needs, ensure proper documentation, and contribute to the creation of comprehensive treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates accurate communication regarding unit activities and patient status. Collaborates with senior nursing leadership on operational challenges.
  • Mentors nursing staff, offering performance feedback, conducting evaluations, and orienting new team members as required. Acts as a clinical resource for nursing and direct care personnel.
  • Engages in the formulation, execution, and assessment of nursing department philosophies and objectives, ensuring optimal utilization of nursing staff.
  • Distributes nursing personnel based on patient acuity, ensuring efficient service delivery and adjusting assignments as necessary. Manages scheduling for breaks and meal periods.
  • Commits to ongoing professional development and maintains up-to-date clinical knowledge relevant to patient care.
  • Administers specialized nursing care, oversees emergency procedures, and ensures that shift responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • May perform duties as a unit nurse when required, adhering to the established RN role.
  • Fulfills additional responsibilities as assigned by nursing leadership.
  • Supports the hospital's mission and values while promoting teamwork and high standards of customer service.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and contributes to special projects and committees as needed.
  • Provides crisis intervention and behavioral management in accordance with individual treatment plans.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to evaluate and adjust treatment strategies to meet patient needs.
  • Responds to directives from designated incident commanders during emergency situations.

Qualifications:

Skills and Competencies: In-depth knowledge of nursing principles across various specialties, including psychiatric and rehabilitation care. Must demonstrate flexibility and maintain professional objectivity. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Commitment to professional integrity and alignment with organizational goals is required. Must prioritize continued education and personal growth.

Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program with relevant experience. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred, along with CRRN certification. Current ACLS certification or willingness to obtain is necessary.

Licensure: Must hold a valid nursing license in Wisconsin and maintain CPR certification.

Experience: A minimum of two years of nursing experience is required, with a preference for experience in hospital-based rehabilitation or psychiatric settings. Previous supervisory or charge nurse experience is advantageous.
