Position Overview:

The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for generating all necessary design documentation required for the procurement, construction, and installation of the products offered by the company. This role involves interpreting customer specifications and leveraging industry expertise to create detailed drawings, bills of materials, and operational instructions for both purchasing and manufacturing teams. The Electrical Design Engineer collaborates closely with Field Technicians and Contractors to ensure successful installation and commissioning of the designed systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct programming, testing, and troubleshooting of traffic signal control systems both in the workshop and on-site.
  • Interpret and apply various codes such as MUTCD, NEMA, and UL, ensuring compliance in relation to the company's products and procedures.
  • Create electrical wiring diagrams based on project specifications, standard templates, or previous projects for new and existing traffic, lighting, and control systems.
  • Develop mechanical drawings for panels, cables, and cabinet layouts, or provide necessary information to mechanical designers for completion.
  • Ensure all design documentation adheres to industry standards and best practices.
  • Compile and verify bills of materials (BoM) for assemblies and components.
  • Prepare cost estimates based on customer requirements or sales inquiries.
  • Draft assembly or installation instructions for various projects.
  • Establish test procedures to validate component or system functionality for new or untested designs.
  • Provide technical support via telephone as required.
  • Utilize CAD systems for all design drawings and manage the documentation archiving process, suggesting improvements where necessary.
  • Analyze technological trends and recommend enhancements or modifications to existing products.
  • Monitor design system technologies and propose changes when necessary.
  • Benchmark against other industries to implement best practices.
  • Document the design process from initial customer specifications to final design release.
  • Record customer-specific preferences in an accessible and editable format.
  • Maintain key performance metrics, including lead time, on-time delivery, and quality reporting.
  • Develop action plans to address issues and promote continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in User Group events, presenting solutions to customers to clarify proposals or explore new alternatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in translating traffic system requirements into standardized electrical designs.
  • Familiarity with traffic products, controllers, software, and design methodologies is preferred.
  • Experience with MUTCD specifications is essential.
  • Knowledge of NEMA Traffic standards, particularly ATC and Caltrans, is advantageous.
  • Field service experience in traffic systems is preferred.
  • Experience in system integration, particularly with multiple products from various suppliers, is a plus.
  • Extensive use of AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines.
  • Proficient in using electrical and electronic testing equipment, hand tools, and power tools.

Work Environment:

This position primarily involves office-based work, with occasional visits to production areas and potential travel requirements. Physical demands include the ability to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
