About the Job

This position is located in the Radiology Department at one of the various IHS facilities located in the Billings Area Indian Health Service.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist/Technologist to join our team. As a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist/Technologist, you will be responsible for taking x-rays and images, scheduling patients for examination, evaluating requests for critical and/or emergency procedures, and performing quality control activities.

Responsibilities
  • Take x-rays and images which may include computerized axial tomography scanning of the head and/or body of varying difficulty.
  • Schedule patients for examination, evaluates request for critical and/or emergency procedures.
  • Responsible for quality control activities.
  • Perform daily, required calibration tests and recording appropriate equipment log.
  • Practice sterile technique and prevent cross contamination during examination.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children.
  • Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is required for all selectees prior to entrance on duty.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.

The following meet these requirements:

(l) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

Specialized Experience:

For positions at GS-4 and above:

Experience in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.

or

Education and Training:

Qualifying educational programs for radiography and radiation therapy technology are available in accredited colleges, universities, hospitals, medical schools, or postsecondary technical or vocational schools. Education or training from programs based in hospitals must have been from those hospitals that were accredited at the time of the education or training by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals or by the American Osteopathic Association.

In addition to the Basic Requirements,

you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of

work and/or tasks:

GS-05:

Successful completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months' duration in a post-high school radiography program. Successful completion of a course for medical radiologic technicians in the Armed Forces is qualifying on a month-for-month basis up to the l year of specialized experience required for GS-5.

OR

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level.

Specialized Experience Examples:

Producing digital images of routine views of the body (i.e., chest, joints, feet, hands, long bones of arms and legs) under general supervision of a senior Radiologist.

GS-06:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level:

Perform a variety of difficult radiographic examinations; receive patient, explain method of procedure, position patient, select and set technical factors, set up and adjust accessory equipment required and make exposures necessary for the requested procedure. Perform procedures such as cholangiography, linear tomography, xerographic mammography, lumbar and thoracic myelography, bronchography, lymphangiography, or femoral arteriography; set up the x-ray room; assure sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters or other required equipment are present and laid out; prepare and administer contrast material orally, by enema, or, under close control of radiologist, intravenously; as requirement by procedure or patient's condition, monitor vital signs such as heart beat and blood pressure and notify radiologist of significant changes; perform examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for routine physical examinations and for diagnosis of illnesses or of injuries of accident victims; assist radiologists and higher grade technologists to perform more complex procedures such as carotid arteriograms.

GS-07:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level:

Perform a variety of difficult radiographic examinations; independently make routine radiographic examinations of head, truck and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries; perform procedures as a team member, with a radiologist, such a bronchograms, cholecysteograms, cholangiograms, urethrograms, G.I. series, and barium and air contrast barium enemas; set up the ex-ray room, assure sterile supplies, local anesthetics, contrast materials, catheters and other required equipment are present and laid out; prepare and administer contrast material; schedule patients for examinations; maintain logs of patients and procedures used; prepare file jackets on patient x-rays; requisition supplies; clean, oil, make minor repairs and adjustments to x-ray equipment, accessories and automatic film processing machine; operate film processing machines; review new developments in the field and recommends to the head of the clinic adoption of those which would improve the operation of the radiology section.

GS-08:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level:

Perform computerized axial tomographic scanning of head and/or bodies; confer with radiologist to establish requirements of standard examinations and determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness cut of scans, etc., to satisfy requirement; advises radiologist or referring physician of results of examination, provide preliminary diagnostic evaluation, notifies radiologist or referring physician of significant scans requiring their immediate attention and visualization while patient is undergoing examination; prepare contrast material under the direction of radiologist for purpose of performing procedure/exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP, cystograms, cholangiograms, fistulagrams, arthograms and myelogram.

Selective Placement Factor:

The incumbent will be required to have and maintain current, unrestricted American Registration of Radiologic Technologist certification. (Please provide a copy with your application).
