Under the guidance of the Chair for Orthopedic Surgery and the Assistant Director for Clinical Development, the Orthopedic Physician Assistant will assist the department and attending physicians in various capacities, including operating room support, call coverage, and outpatient care. Productivity benchmarks will be established within the 50th to 75th percentile of MGMA standards. Key responsibilities include:
  • Conducting thorough and focused medical evaluations, interpreting laboratory and diagnostic results, and developing differential diagnoses and treatment plans for orthopedic conditions within the designated scope of practice.
  • Ordering and performing necessary laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging, including but not limited to EMG, ECG, compartment pressure assessments, and various x-ray studies.
  • Executing procedures such as digital blocks, regional anesthesia, and minor outpatient surgeries, including tendon repairs and wound management.
  • Carrying out diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, including joint aspirations, closed reductions, and injections for various conditions.
  • Assisting in surgical procedures, including first assisting, tissue closures, and other tasks as delegated by the supervising surgeon. Conducting hospital rounds, writing orders, and providing on-call support for the orthopedic surgeon.
  • Prescribing and administering medications, orthotic devices, and other orthopedic tools as permitted by state regulations.
  • Evaluating and advising patients on health maintenance while promoting the use of community resources. Participating in research initiatives, managing data, and ensuring quality assurance.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure in VA, DC, and MD is required.
