Under the guidance of the Chair for Orthopedic Surgery and the Assistant Director for Clinical Development, the Orthopedic Physician Assistant will assist the Department and Attending Physicians in various capacities, including the Operating Room, Call & ED Coverage, Procedures, and Outpatient care. Productivity benchmarks will be established at the 50th - 75th percentile MGMA. Key responsibilities include:
  • Conducting thorough and focused history and physical examinations, interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests. Correlating subjective and objective findings to develop differential diagnoses and establish working diagnoses. Creating treatment plans for orthopedic conditions within the scope of practice. Implementing therapeutic interventions when appropriate and exercising judgment for cases requiring consultation or referral to supervising orthopedic surgeons or other healthcare professionals.
  • Ordering, collecting, and performing necessary laboratory or diagnostic tests, including but not limited to blood and tissue samples. Conducting diagnostic studies such as EMG, electrocardiograms, compartment pressure assessments, and various imaging studies including CT, MRI, and bone scans.
  • Executing procedures such as digital blocks, regional anesthesia, and minor outpatient surgical interventions including tendon repairs, wound management, and drainage procedures.
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions including joint aspirations, closed reductions of fractures and dislocations, and injections into joints, tendons, and trigger points, as well as applying braces, casts, and splints.
  • Assisting in surgical procedures, including first assisting, tissue closures, and applying appliances as delegated by the surgeon. Conducting hospital rounds, writing orders, and being on call for the orthopedic surgeon. Evaluating clinical conditions, formulating and implementing treatment plans for hospitalized patients, and dictating discharge summaries and histories.
  • Ordering, prescribing, dispensing, and administering medications, orthotics, braces, and other orthopedic devices as permitted by state regulations.
  • Evaluating, screening, and counseling patients on health maintenance and promoting the use of community resources. Participating in research initiatives, managing databases, and ensuring quality assurance.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Must hold or be eligible for licensure in VA, DC, and MD.
