The Director of Social Studies is responsible for spearheading the development and implementation of district-wide strategies pertaining to Social Studies curriculum, pedagogy, and student engagement. This role involves collaboration with both internal stakeholders and external community organizations to ensure effective execution of district initiatives that extend beyond standard instructional hours. The position provides comprehensive leadership across K-12 Social Studies, including oversight and coordination of relevant curriculum, assessment, instruction, and professional development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:- Manage the execution of K-12 curriculum and assessment aligned with relevant content standards.
- Oversee the coordination and application of educational standards across the district.
- Design and facilitate ongoing professional development sessions focused on best practices in teaching and learning for district personnel, school leaders, and educators.
- Collaborate with external partners and organizations to enhance student access and success in Social Studies.
- Utilize collected data to strategically address the needs of school leaders and educators.
- Implement continuous improvement methodologies to evaluate and refine strategies and their execution.
- Provide guidance to school leaders on contemporary best practices in education.
- Lead the selection and/or development of curriculum and assessment tools.
- Work in partnership with a dynamic team across various departments to promote educational excellence within the district.
- Guide the establishment of district priorities and policies related to educational and personnel matters in Social Studies.
- Drive improvements in existing educational programs.
- Keep senior leadership informed about all aspects of Social Studies strategy and execution.
- Represent the district in discussions at local, state, and national levels.
- Identify, secure, and manage grants and partnerships to bolster district initiatives.
- Oversee the evaluation and selection process for instructional materials in relevant content areas.
- Provide professional development and technical support to relevant staff.
- Offer supervision, mentoring, and professional growth opportunities to assigned personnel.
- Ensure compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; adhere to federal and state laws, school board policies, and professional standards.
- Master's degree in education or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I endorsement.
- A minimum of four years of teaching experience in Social Studies or related leadership roles.
- At least three years of experience in developing and delivering professional development for educators; experience at the district level and in urban settings is preferred.
- Proven experience in curriculum and assessment development.
- Familiarity with effective assessment tools for students, schools, and districts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver impactful presentations.
- Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and organizational abilities.
- Demonstrated capability to supervise and evaluate educational staff.
- Ability to quickly assimilate information related to unfamiliar content areas or grade levels.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects and tasks effectively.
- Aptitude for thriving in a fast-paced educational environment.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Ability to facilitate positive communication and coordination of program activities with educators and administrators.
- Commitment to promoting educational equity.
- Experienced facilitator of professional development initiatives.
- Proficient in data analysis and report preparation.
- Skilled in preparing and delivering effective presentations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint.
