PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chief Operations Officer is accountable for managing the daily functions of the business unit TEN Logistics to ensure that performance benchmarks and profitability goals are met. This encompasses strategic planning, personnel development, sales enhancement, account management, budgeting, forecasting, marketing, operations, and P&L oversight. This leadership role demands a positive and proactive mindset, with the ability to identify and clearly communicate business objectives, ensure resource availability and alignment, and ultimately realize desired financial outcomes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership:

  • Oversees all operational aspects of the organization to meet goals, objectives, and strategic plans.
  • Through effective communication, sets the standard for the company’s service level to clients, interactions with carriers and business partners, as well as employee relations.
  • Promotes a positive, growth-oriented culture that emphasizes teamwork, collaboration, continuous learning, and a proactive approach to all business facets.
  • Manages personnel and fosters employee development through coaching, training, and a structured feedback system to ensure performance and growth.
  • Acts with the utmost integrity and honesty in all dealings, embodying the core values of Stein Industries: We Are Growth Driven; We Do The Right Thing; We Get Things Done; We Are Team Players.
  • Collaborates with Stein Industries' shared services to enhance back-office and talent management capabilities and directs the annual planning process.

Strategy & People:

  • Develops and communicates the company’s vision statement, establishing our purpose, values, and mission while aligning the core focus of the organization.
  • Ensures the company has the right talent in the right roles to effectively execute the vision, mission, and strategic focus.
  • Implements organizational discipline to maintain adherence to strategic direction through effective communication and management actions.
  • Analyzes industry trends, market conditions, and competitive landscape to adapt strategic positioning, initiatives, and action items as necessary.
  • Develops a rolling three-year strategic plan that reflects an understanding of the marketplace, company SWOT analysis, value proposition, and evaluation of strategic initiatives.

Operations:

  • Ensures clear and consistent communication of annual plans, objectives, and initiatives to all employees.
  • Conducts budget and performance reviews with department heads, ensuring they are managing relevant operating expenses against budget.

Encourages innovative thinking across all operational areas to continuously enhance efficiency.

Works closely with operational managers to establish and maintain a safe and reliable carrier network while negotiating competitive freight rates that benefit both clients and the business.

  • Manages direct reports to achieve planned objectives through timely review and reporting systems, as well as cross-training when appropriate.
  • Delegates responsibility, accountability, and authority to enable each direct report to fulfill their role effectively.
  • Conducts annual performance and compensation reviews with each direct report, ensuring they do the same for their teams.
  • Leads and supports the identification and implementation of new technologies and systems to facilitate efficient operations and scalable growth.

Sales & Marketing:

  • Identifies target market segments and develops services, programs, pricing, and positioning strategies to effectively drive sales and increase market share.
  • Establishes a sales-oriented, growth-focused culture with clear communication of goals and performance metrics throughout the organization.
  • Creates a customer-centric support operation that emphasizes exceptional service, proactive engagement, and innovative solutions.
  • Directs marketing initiatives, including collateral development, website design, and digital strategies to enhance brand awareness, generate leads, and boost sales.

Financial:

  • Holds full P&L responsibility for the organization.
  • Oversees accounts receivable, aging, and collections processes.
  • Effectively manages pricing, gross margin, compensation and commission structures, and operating expenses.
  • Participates in monthly and quarterly performance reviews against budget and related KPIs.
  • Responsible for monthly revenue forecasts for the upcoming three months.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Logistics, or a related field, or 10+ years of equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 5-7 years of management experience in various roles within a 3PL environment.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a General Manager or in a comparable role.
  • 5+ years of team management experience.
  • Strong understanding of business financial management, including budgeting, profit and loss, forecasting, and planning.
  • Proven track record of leadership and significant sales growth.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively.
  • Capacity to make timely decisions and follow through on commitments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Aptitude for composing professional business reports and correspondence.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
