Heavy Equipment Operator

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Motor Equipment Operator to join our team at the City of Somerville. As a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating heavy motor equipment in a safe and efficient manner to perform various tasks.
Key Responsibilities- Operate heavy motor equipment, such as trucks, plows, and sanders, to perform tasks such as loading and unloading materials, plowing and sanding highways, and performing minor maintenance.
- Load and unload trucks, pick up and haul materials, and perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform unskilled labor duties, such as digging holes, trenches, and other excavations, shoveling materials, and leveling areas.
- Operate hand and power tools, such as shovels, picks, axes, saws, and heavy wrenches, to perform tasks such as mowing grass, trimming shrubs, and removing snow and ice.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisors.
- Ability to receive and interpret written and oral instructions and to give written and oral reports to supervisors.
- Ability to use tools of trade in a workmanlike manner.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to adapt to changing situations.
- Ability to work in close quarters and to function in outside environmental conditions, including wet, hot, and cold weather.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds and to push and pull heavy equipment.
The work environment requires agility and physical strength, and the ability to function in close quarters. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, including wet, hot, and cold weather, and to noise, vibrations, hazards, and atmospheric conditions, including fumes, dust, and air contaminants.
Physical and Mental RequirementsThe physical demands of this job include standing and walking for most of the day, lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, pushing and pulling, climbing, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, crouching, and stooping. The position requires near and far vision and acute hearing, and the ability to maintain heavy physical exertion for long periods of time.
