POSITION OVERVIEW

The Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for providing both direct and indirect anesthesia care to patients undergoing various medical procedures, including surgical and obstetric interventions, as well as pain management. This role requires the application of the nursing process through thorough assessment, identification of patient needs, and the formulation and execution of an anesthetic care plan.

Critical thinking skills are essential to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and age-appropriate care. The Nurse Anesthetist will manage pain relief issues, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and provide care for critically ill patients. Effective communication and collaboration with the healthcare team are vital. Compliance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and professional practice guidelines is mandatory.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid New Mexico and federal DEA certificate
- Current nursing license in New Mexico
- Graduate from an accredited nurse anesthesia program
- Certification as a nurse anesthetist from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor
- Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Current ACLS certification from the AHA
- Current PALS certification from the AHA
- Active CRNA license in New Mexico

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Understanding of the nursing role and scope as defined by the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act
- Knowledge of the nurse anesthetist role as outlined by the AANA Scope and Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice
- Awareness of current trends and standards in anesthesia care
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to delivering excellent customer service

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCIES
- Basic computer skills, including keyboarding and word processing
- Proficiency in using anesthesia delivery equipment, such as anesthesia machines, monitors, and IV pumps

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts comprehensive pre-anesthetic assessments and evaluations, including necessary consultations and diagnostic tests
- Engages with patients to discuss their medical history and previous anesthesia experiences
- Develops and implements individualized anesthesia care plans
- Reassesses patients immediately before anesthesia induction
- Administers appropriate anesthetic techniques, including general, regional, and local anesthesia
- Manages anesthetic agents and fluids to maintain physiological stability and address any adverse reactions
- Implements non-invasive and invasive monitoring techniques to gather and interpret physiological data
- Oversees airway management and pulmonary function through various techniques, including intubation and mechanical ventilation.

Facilitates recovery from anesthesia by administering necessary medications and fluids to ensure patient comfort and stability.

Orders and adjusts pain management therapies, utilizing medications and regional anesthetic techniques.

Responds effectively to emergencies by providing airway management and administering emergency medications.

Assesses and manages the patient's blood, fluid, and electrolyte balance
Delivers anesthesia interventions in a structured and prioritized manner to meet patient needs.
Collaborates with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Maintains accurate documentation and patient records.
Assists in training and orienting new staff members.
Implements safety measures to protect patients, visitors, and staff.
Upholds confidentiality and respects the rights and privacy of all individuals.
