MHI Ship Repair & Services is a leading marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration, and commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is strategically located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.
Key Responsibilities- Operate 150-ton crane or 10-ton thru 90-ton hydraulic crane to lift, move, and position loads, such as machinery, equipment, products, and solid or bulk materials, using hoisting attachments, such as hook, sling, electromagnet, or bucket.
- Complete inspection reports and checklists, ensuring compliance with OSHA & ANSI B30.5 regulations.
- Inspect crane before operation and notify supervisor of defects or malfunctions, performing simple maintenance tasks as needed.
- Calculate weights of items to be moved and check capacity of crane to ensure that the load meets manufacturer's specifications.
- Check clearances, overhead lines, or any obstructions to avoid accidents or damage to personnel, building, load, or equipment.
- Locate and set crane in required area, checking ground for adequate ground pressure and using proper mat if necessary.
- Operate equipment in response to hand or audio signals from other crew members, working in cooperation with another crane as a team effort when required.
- Obeys all safety guidelines - federal, state, and company imposed - for inspection, operation, leaving crane unattended, erecting, and dismantling.
- Clean and maintain crane and hoisting mechanisms.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Five or more years of on-the-job experience or combination of experience and completion of three-year apprenticeship program for mobile crane operators or other education programs.
- Certification by the North American Crane Bureau Group or the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators.
- Valid state CDL B license and current medical certification.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Reading and writing skills sufficient to understand written directions, applicable safety regulations, and to maintain records.
- Must be a steady, reliable worker.
