Key Responsibilities

A typical day for an Obstetric Technician at Hackensack Meridian includes:

  • Assisting nursing staff in delivering both direct and indirect patient care, adhering to the care plan established by the registered nurse.
  • Managing the inventory of supplies for the operating room, post-anesthesia care unit, and labor rooms, ensuring that all necessary items are available and ready for use.
  • Maintaining sterile conditions in the surgical area, including proper scrubbing, gowning, and gloving techniques, while ensuring accurate counts of instruments and sponges.
  • Supporting surgeons during various procedures, including Cesarean sections and other obstetric surgeries.
  • Communicating any changes in patient status to nursing staff promptly and accurately.
  • Responding to patient and family requests for assistance in a timely manner, ensuring all needs are met.
  • Collaborating with the team to safeguard patient belongings and ensure proper labeling and handling during transfers or discharges.
  • Exhibiting calm and sound judgment in emergency situations, effectively participating in crisis management.
  • Demonstrating proper use and maintenance of medical equipment and supplies, ensuring readiness for patient care.
  • Upholding patient safety and quality outcomes through diligent practice and adherence to established regulations and ethical standards.
  • Performing additional duties and projects as assigned.
  • Complying with organizational competencies and standards of conduct.
  • Meeting physical demands of the role, including lifting and standing for extended periods.
  • Engaging regularly with medical personnel and visitors.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification is necessary.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technician or OB Technician is required, or proof of meeting the NJSurgical Technology Certification law requirements.
  • Preferred candidates will have at least one year of experience in a hospital setting.
  • Previous experience as an OB Technician or Surgical Technician in an acute care environment is advantageous.
