At Portage County Health & Human Services, we are committed to assisting individuals in reintegrating into society after incarceration. Our Weekend Relief Staff position plays a vital role in this process, working closely with residents, clients, and staff to provide a safe and supportive environment.

About the Role

This is an on-call position that requires working mainly weekends and evenings. As a Weekend Relief Staff member, you will be responsible for maintaining order and safety in the house, supervising residents' activities, and communicating with other staff regarding their behavior and whereabouts.

You will also be responsible for supervising clients, interacting with them, and responding to any rule or policy infractions. Additionally, you will participate in special house meetings while on duty, record clients' activities in log books, and write reports as necessary.

ResponsibilitiesHouse Coverage and Supervision
  • Maintain order and safety in the house, typically the only staff member on duty during shift.
  • Monitor residents' activities and whereabouts, remaining in the house for the entire shift.
  • Ensure house rules, policies, and residents' commitments are being followed.
  • Answer phone calls, take messages, and communicate with other staff regarding residents' activities and behavior.
  • Monitor visitors during shift.
Client Supervision
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and Thursday evening meetings when necessary.
  • Be available to clients during shift, supervising and interacting with them, listening to their concerns, encouraging positive behavior, and confronting negative behavior.
  • Respond to rule or policy infractions by writing disciplinary C-notes, determining actions for minor C-notes, and recording those actions.
  • Participate in special house meetings while on duty.
  • Record clients' activities in log books and write reports as necessary.
House Management
  • Be responsible for house cleanliness during shift and assign and monitor residents' house chores.
  • Check smoke alarms and conduct fire drills when needed, monitoring residents' activities during emergencies to ensure safety and state code compliance.

What We're Looking For

  • A high school diploma or equivalency is required, along with a minimum of six credits of coursework in psychology, sociology, social work, or a related human services field, or comparable training or experience.
  • Group and/or individual counseling experience is preferred, as is experience dealing with halfway house clients.
  • A licensed driver with access to an insured vehicle is also preferred.
