Job Overview

I. General Summary

Under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals, the Patient Care Technician provides essential support in patient management. Responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, managing surgical dressings, and assisting patients with daily living activities. This position involves performing blood draws and collecting various specimen samples. The technician evaluates and communicates patient status to identify needs and deliver appropriate care, functioning as a vital member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

II. Key Responsibilities


The following duties outline the primary functions of this role. They are not exhaustive and may include additional tasks as required.



1. Conducts assessments and manages patient care based on clinical findings and test results.

2. Documents patient care activities, including daily living tasks such as feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, and transferring.

3. Accurately records and reports vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, and pain levels.

4. Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for patients.

5. Engages in cost-effective practices to enhance patient outcomes.

6. Promotes patient safety, including fall prevention, ensuring a secure clinical environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

7. Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and work areas, ensuring adequate supplies and linens are available.

8. Provides post-mortem care as necessary.


9. Collaborates with healthcare team members to implement care plans, reporting any changes in patient conditions.



10. Ensures patient comfort in relation to pain management.

11. Measures and documents urinary and stool output, calorie intake, and patient weight.

12. Performs care for indwelling urinary catheters and manages external catheter devices.

13. Conducts blood glucose monitoring as required.

14. Provides wound care to facilitate healing and maintain skin integrity, reporting any issues related to skin health.

15. Assists in the collection of patient specimens for laboratory analysis, adhering to proper identification and documentation protocols.

16. Provides care for orthopedic and rehabilitation devices:
e.g., braces, splints, and compression wraps.

17. Participates in regular patient rounding in collaboration with the healthcare team.

18. Responds promptly to patient-triggered alarms, including call lights and monitoring devices.

19. Adheres to safety goals and protocols established by regulatory bodies within the scope of practice.

20. Identifies and reports safety risks, taking action to mitigate potential hazards. Reports any adverse events to management.

21. Maintains professional vigilance for assigned patients, including when designated as a patient safety companion.

22. Utilizes safe lifting techniques and body mechanics in daily activities.

23. Enhances patient flow and minimizes delays in care.

24. Performs additional duties as assigned.
