Position Overview

The Animal Care Technician is responsible for welcoming and assisting clients as they arrive at the clinic. This role involves educating and communicating with clients and patients in examination rooms, managing phone inquiries, and providing support to veterinarians and technicians during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures. The technician aids in animal restraint, maintains cleanliness, communicates with clients regarding treatments, and monitors patient progress.

Clinical Duties:

Patient Care

  • Attend to boarding and hospitalized animals, including cleaning cages, exercising, feeding, and monitoring for signs of illness while preventing the spread of parasites and infectious diseases.
  • Ensure that patients are discharged in a well-groomed and medically stable condition.
  • Assist veterinarians or technicians with patient restraint.
  • Administer medications under the guidance of a veterinarian or technician, including eye, oral, skin, ear, topical, and subcutaneous injections.
  • Perform blood draws, catheter placements, and administer treatments as directed by veterinarians.
  • Document patient status in medical records and report any concerning behaviors to the supervising technician or veterinarian.
  • Weigh and take the temperature of patients, documenting findings in medical records.

Examination Room Duties

  • Monitor the doctor’s schedule upon patient arrival and input relevant information into medical records.
  • Record patient weight and enter it into the system.
  • Guide clients and their pets into examination rooms.
  • Obtain patient temperature when possible, seeking assistance if the animal is agitated.
  • Gather patient history and document it in the medical record.
  • Discuss visit recommendations with clients when applicable.
  • Educate clients on the benefits of services and products.
  • Collect samples for laboratory analysis when possible.
  • Assist veterinarians with patient restraint as necessary.
  • Provide treats and utilize distraction techniques as needed.
  • Complete medical records for veterinarians as required.
  • Prepare prescriptions, client handouts, rabies certificates, refills, and invoices.
  • Input tasks and reminders as necessary.

Reception Duties

  • Welcome clients and their pets.
  • Answer phone calls as needed.
  • Inform clients of expected wait times if there are delays.
  • Schedule appointments according to hospital protocols.
  • Respond to routine inquiries regarding medical care (costs, vaccines, blood work, etc.) and document in medical records.
  • Provide estimates when necessary.
  • Update client contact information in the database.
  • Document all communications with clients in the patient’s medical record.
  • Screen and direct calls to the appropriate staff.
  • Prepare invoices and process payments.
  • Complete consent forms as required.

Radiology Duties

  • Assist veterinarians or technicians with patient restraint during radiographic procedures.
  • Adhere to radiation safety protocols.

Laboratory & Pharmacy Duties

  • Collect samples (ears, fecal, urine).
  • Set up basic laboratory tests as needed.
  • Fill prescriptions and prepare liquid oral medications.
  • Report low stock or expired supplies to the inventory manager.
  • Prefill medications as required.

Surgical Assistance Duties

  • Assist in admitting patients for surgery and dental procedures.
  • Maintain surgical materials and prepare sterile packs.
  • Assist with patient restraint during surgical procedures.
  • Monitor anesthesia closely and document patient status.
  • Support veterinarians during surgeries as needed.
  • Monitor recovery from anesthesia and follow up with clients post-surgery.

Housekeeping Duties

  • Perform laundry and maintain cleanliness of cages and kennels.
  • Ensure cleanliness of treatment areas and surgical suites.
  • Assist with facility maintenance to uphold a clean environment.

Client Communication Duties

  • Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor when interacting with pet owners.
  • Possess basic knowledge of common diseases and preventative health care.

Safety Protocols

  • Comply with OSHA regulations and practice health and safety protocols.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist in the reception area and understand client checkout procedures.
  • Become proficient in veterinary practice-management software.
  • Participate in staff meetings and assist in training new employees as needed.

Qualifications & Skills Required

Educational Background:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a veterinary assistant is preferred.

Skills:

  • Ability to assist veterinarians and technicians effectively.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with staff and clients.
  • Capability to multitask and work efficiently.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds and endure prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Basic computer skills and typing proficiency.
  • Ability to work in a noisy environment.
