SalaryThe salary for this position is approximately $55,027 per year, with the potential for an increased salary of $60,574 after 12 months of successful job performance.
Job DescriptionAbout the RoleThe Children's Librarian will be responsible for cultivating creative thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and resourceful users of information among the library's youth population. This individual will embody the characteristics of a skilled librarian, including strong public service skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well with diverse patrons.
- Provide reference service and resource recommendations using print, media, and digital resources.
- Collaborate with the Educational Services Department to develop and promote innovative programs for children, including book discussions, author talks, technology classes, and other activities.
- Partner with the collection development team to build and maintain a diverse, current, and relevant children's collection that meets the needs of the community.
- Work to engage children with the collection in ways that allow them to follow their interests and discover new ones.
- Conduct outreach to community-based organizations, city support agencies, educational institutions, and local businesses to promote the library's services and programs.
- Encourage digital literacy and provide technology instruction.
- Develop and maintain the layout and appearance of the adult space, ensuring a safe and inviting area filled with relevant resources.
- Maintain a working knowledge of trends in children's literature, educational needs, and professional developments through webinars, internal training, meetings, conferences, and professional literature.
Required Skills and QualificationsAbout YouTo succeed in this role, you will need:
- A Master's degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited program.
- A Public Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York.
- Strong commitment to public service and the ability to work well with diverse patrons.
- Experience creating and conducting innovative programs for children.
- Knowledge of children's literature and experience maintaining a children's collection.
- Experience building partnerships with local organizations to meet the needs of community users.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.
- Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
- Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
- Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs, and e-reader devices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer services, including online searching, social media, reference resources, and databases.
