Job Summary:
An Ophthalmic Technician is a valuable asset to our team at Southgate Surgery Center, assisting in providing excellent patient care during visits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assists in monitoring vital signs and transporting patients.
- Maintains aseptic technique at all times, observing for any break in technique.
- Carefully handles contaminated items and assists in stocking OR supplies.
- Checks equipment, such as sterilizer and refrigerator temperature, each surgical day and documents on a monthly log sheet.
- Assists each area as requested and assists in pre-op assessment.
- Discontinues Hep-Locks and assists in post-op instruction review with patients.
- Acts under the direct supervision of the nurse and performs fingerstick blood sugar.
- Documents medical record results, including BS and VS.
- Assists physician during laser procedures and reports pertinent observations to nurses and/or physician.
- Identifies patient and family teaching needs and initiates intervention to meet needs.
- Maintains a positive, safe environment for patients and co-workers.
- Assists with emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patient condition.
- Monitors inventory levels in accordance with desired quantities.
- Attends departmental meetings and in-service education, demonstrating responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) is preferred.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, frequently required to stand, walk, and sit, and must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
