Description
SUMMARY:
The individual in this role is responsible for inspecting, servicing, and maintaining diesel locomotives in compliance with federal and corporate standards. This includes diagnosing diesel engine issues and executing necessary repairs using hand tools, measuring devices, and occasionally machine tools. The technician may also operate mechanical equipment to assemble, repair, and fabricate metal components and may need to qualify as a shop-service locomotive engineer following regulatory standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adhere to all railroad safety and operational regulations, as well as Federal Railroad Administration guidelines.
- Conduct daily inspections, servicing, and maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives, which encompasses scheduled and preventative maintenance as per company policy; tasks include fueling, checking, and adjusting oil and liquid levels; changing engine air, air compressor, fuel, and lubrication oil filters; replacing and maintaining engine parts, traction motors, generators, air compressors, wheels, and truck components; and cleaning locomotives as required.
- Ensure compliance with FRA regulations related to locomotive maintenance and inspection, along with environmental standards.
- Troubleshoot and identify issues in diesel engines, air systems, trucks, or other components; perform repairs or replacements as needed.
- Carry out car-body repairs on locomotives, including metal fabrication and welding tasks.
- Operate forklifts, light cranes, power tools, and hydraulic equipment while working outdoors in various weather conditions, in confined spaces, and/or at elevated heights.
- Assist with additional projects and perform other assigned duties.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Familiarity with FRA regulations regarding locomotive maintenance and inspection.
- Understanding of railroad environmental standards.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience as a heavy mechanic.
- Capability to read and understand written and verbal instructions.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:
- High school diploma or GED; four-year journeyman locomotive machinist/mechanic certification is advantageous; Locomotive Service Engineer certification is a plus; welding certification is also beneficial.
- Must be at least eighteen years old.
- Valid driver's license is required.
