The Irvine Police Department is in search of a Crime Scene Investigation Specialist to conduct thorough investigations at crime scenes, focusing on the identification, collection, and preservation of crucial physical evidence.

This role may be filled at either the Crime Scene Investigation Specialist I or II level, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Crime Scene Investigation Specialist II Salary:

$52.76 Hourly

The salary for this position is competitive and negotiable based on experience.

All candidates must successfully complete the Public Safety process, which includes a psychological evaluation. The Crime Scene Investigation Unit operates year-round, requiring staff to work various hours, including overtime, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. This position may also require being on call during off-duty hours.

Your Responsibilities
  • Identify, collect, safeguard, and analyze materials and substances as evidence at crime scenes using specialized equipment and techniques.
  • Develop and lift latent fingerprints; prepare and input latent prints into the CAL-ID system; conduct comparisons of latent prints.
  • Gather and categorize other types of impression evidence.
  • Conduct basic examinations and collect weapons such as firearms and sharp objects.
  • Document physical or trace evidence through various photographic techniques.
  • Create castings of tire, shoe, tool, and other impressions.
  • Perform basic analyses of biological evidence.
  • Document crime scenes with photographs, video recordings, diagrams, and reports; research criminal and court records.
  • Capture various types of photographs of evidence, property, and individuals involved; may prepare chemicals for latent print development.
  • Prepare evidence for court presentations.
  • Maintain comprehensive records, reports, and files related to evidence collection and preservation.
  • Interview victims and witnesses at crime scenes; may interview arrestees to gather evidence.
  • May conduct aerial photography.
Additional Responsibilities for Crime Scene Investigation Specialist II:
  • Experience in conducting independent latent print comparisons.
  • Experience collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.

  • Completion of a forensic academy or crime scene investigation program.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field with coursework in Forensic Science or Crime Scene Investigation, along with three years of relevant work experience in law enforcement.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Preferred: Certificate of completion from a crime scene investigation program or forensic academy.
Minimum Qualifications for Crime Scene Investigation Specialist II
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field with coursework in Forensic Science or Crime Scene Investigation.
  • Four years of experience in law enforcement, independently processing crime scenes and conducting latent print comparisons.
  • Proof of latent print certification or completion of a latent print comparison training program.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Preferred: Certificate of completion from a crime scene investigation program or forensic academy.
