Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Water Distribution Operator to join our team at the City of Idaho Falls, ID. As a key member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for performing working-level skilled plumbing and pipe fitting duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of City Water Distribution Systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Installs, renews, or repairs water service lines, clamp leaks on existing service lines, and installs copper tubing, curb and corporation stops, and fittings for renewed or new service lines.
  • Installs, renews, or repairs water mains and services, taps mains to make water service and main line connections, and installs, reads, and repairs water meters and meter pits.
  • Repairs leaks in water systems, raises or lowers valve boxes, curb boxes, manholes, or fire hydrants when necessary for changes of grade on streets, sidewalks, etc.
  • Conducts fire flow testing for fire hydrants using specialized flow and pressure testing equipment, exercises water valves and fire hydrants manually and with valve exercising trailer, and performs system flushing for water quality control.
  • Locates water mains and service lines, performs leak detection, and uses hand shovel and pick to complete fine grading or bedding of pipe.
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or GED and three (3) to six (6) months of specialized training obtained through in-service vocational or technical trade school.
  • Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety procedures associated with water line construction, working knowledge of typical water line problems, and working knowledge of plumbing or pipe fitting methods and procedures typical to water distribution systems.
  • Ability to adapt to emergency or unusual situations, perform manual tasks for a sustained period of time, and tolerate extremes in the work environment.
  • Must possess an Idaho Water OIT (Operator-In-Training) license or equivalent from another state, possession of a Class I Idaho Water Distribution Operator License preferable, and a valid Idaho State Driver's License.
