Our Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Thermal Engineering Manager to join our team at Exponent in Phoenix, AZ. As a key member of our Practice, you will lead the development of thermal engineering solutions for complex battery systems. Your expertise will be applied to failure analysis, design support, and experimental test programs for electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute test plans, instrument, and carry out laboratory tests for battery thermal performance
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis to optimize battery thermal management systems
  • Prepare proposals, technical reports, and present findings to clients on battery thermal engineering solutions
  • Lead project work, which may require travel within and outside the region

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Fire Protection Engineering
  • 3-5 years of direct experience with battery testing, battery performance measurement, battery failure analysis, or electrochemical systems analysis
  • Strong technical background in thermal sciences and battery systems, including vent gas and fire propagation, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and material response in fire
  • Experience with battery electric vehicle systems (thermal testing and/or crashworthiness) is a plus
  • Experience with battery electric vehicle codes and standards is a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and proven ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong skills in laboratory methods, including construction of experimental apparatus, instrumentation, data acquisition, and data analysis
  • Strong desire and ability to tackle a wide variety of engineering problems within and outside direct areas of specialization
  • Presently legally authorized to work in the United States
