We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Sterile Processing Technician II to join our team at Dignity Health – Northridge Hospital Medical Center. As a key member of our Central Sterilization department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest level of patient care by processing and sterilizing medical instruments and equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Clean and decontaminate surgical instruments and medical equipment in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize medical devices following manufacturer's recommendations and established protocols.
- Operate and maintain cleaning and sterilization equipment in the department, adhering to manufacturer's guidelines and established procedures.
- Perform biological tests and maintain records on all autoclaves.
- Inspect instruments to ensure they are in good working condition, sending them for repair or sharpening as needed.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, as well as sterile fields in operating rooms.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of sterilization, asepsis, infection control, and universal safety precautions.
- Prepare for potential emergencies, such as fires and earthquakes.
- Demonstrate organizational skills, cost-consciousness, and quality assurance procedures in the performance of job tasks.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues and supervisory staff to ensure the smooth functioning of operating room activities.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, and fill surgical case cart requisitions using the hospital's computer system.
- Comply with established hospital and departmental policies, protocols, procedures, and objectives.
- Establish and maintain professional, cooperative interpersonal relationships with staff members, physicians, patients, patient family members, and the public, while ensuring confidentiality of patient information.
- Assemble, inspect, wrap, and label all O.R. sets, including specialty sets, according to department protocol and manufacturer recommendations.
- Assist in maintaining supply levels of all items required for department stock, communicating with those responsible for ordering.
- Must be able to articulate knowledge of soaps and detergents, methods of packaging, types of sterilization, methods and parameters, infection control practices, high-level disinfection practices, and safe practices in Sterile Processing.
- Report broken instrumentation and equipment.
- Independently operate all equipment in SPD.
- Able to handle flexible scopes after manual cleaning has been completed.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues and supervisory staff to ensure the smooth functioning of operating room activities.
- Will act as a preceptor, mentor, and role model for other staff members, and/or assist with departmental orientation as required.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
- Minimum of two years' experience with surgical instrumentation required.
- Minimum two years' prior sterile processing or surgical tech experience required.
- Completion of a Sterile Processing Program or surgical tech program required.
- High School Graduate or equivalent required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution preferred.
- CRCST (HPSA) required within 6-months of hire/transfer for Certified Surgical Technologist.
- Current AHA BLS card required.
- Fire Card (within 90 days of hire) required.
This position is represented by SEIU-UHW and is covered by the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement.
