POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and the Director of Nursing, the Emergency Care Technician is tasked with providing both direct and indirect patient support as assigned, adhering to their professional scope of practice. This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities aimed at fulfilling patient and departmental requirements, including but not limited to patient transport, involvement in care planning, data gathering, and effective communication of any changes to the healthcare team.

The Emergency Care Technician must possess a thorough understanding of the supplies, equipment, and instruments utilized in the emergency setting, ensuring all duties align with regulatory standards, organizational policies, and best practices. The position demands strong communication skills to interact with medical personnel, other departments, and external agencies while upholding patient confidentiality.

KEY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  1. Participates in daily briefings and reports at the start of each shift.
  2. Maintains compliance with infection control, OSHA, and safety protocols.
  3. Assists healthcare professionals with general patient care, specific treatments, and procedures as required.
  4. Prepares wound sites through various methods including cleaning and applying pressure.
  5. Provides sponge baths for pediatric patients with elevated temperatures in the absence of guardians.
  6. Prepares sterile trays and aids physicians during procedures.
  7. Applies sterile dressings as necessary.
  8. Collects blood samples following phlebotomy protocols.
  9. Supports orthopedic procedures, including crutch adjustments and patient instruction.
  10. Obtains urine samples for analysis.
  11. Conducts urinary bladder catheterization when needed.
  12. Connects patients to cardiac monitoring equipment.
  13. Assists in resuscitation efforts.
  14. Transports specimens to the laboratory during peak times.
  15. Facilitates the movement of non-ambulatory patients in and out of the facility.
  16. Regularly clears waste from treatment areas.
  17. Ensures patient rooms are clean and prepared, including maintaining stretchers and exam tables.
  18. Checks and replenishes supplies in treatment rooms each shift.
  19. Inspects supply cabinets and prepares requisitions for management approval.
  20. Responsible for monitoring the expiration dates of sterile supplies monthly.
  21. Stocks linens in patient rooms and the linen cabinet as required.
  22. Prepares patient charts under RN supervision, including necessary documentation.
  23. Organizes the storage of Central Supply items upon delivery.
  24. Reports any issues to the supervising nurse on duty.
  25. Possesses knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  26. May place saline locks as needed.
  27. May initiate crystalloid solutions without added pharmacological agents (EMT-1 only).

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

TRAINING

Documented training in phlebotomy and glucose testing is mandatory.

CERTIFICATION

Preferred certification as a Licensed Emergency Technician; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of one year of recent experience as an emergency medical technician or two years in a medical environment, preferably in emergency care.
