Job Title: Service Foreman
Craft: Service

Exempt Status: Hourly (non-exempt)


Position Objective:
The Service Foreman is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the service crew engaged in various construction tasks on civil construction projects, while also participating in hands-on activities.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a crew performing diverse construction functions, including underground piping, excavation, grading, and water services.
  • Independently document, plan, and execute work activities.
  • Operate heavy construction machinery as required.
  • Conduct hydrostatic testing on water and reclaim systems, vacuum and air testing on sewer manholes, and manage mud work on sewer and storm manholes.
  • Collaborate with management and personnel to receive instructions for crew and subcontractors, ensuring effective planning and execution of work procedures.
  • Inspect work progress, equipment, and construction sites to ensure compliance with company standards and safety protocols.
  • Facilitate regular safety meetings to promote a safe working environment.
  • Order and assess necessary equipment according to project specifications.
  • Report on work progress, time, materials, and any issues to the Superintendent.
  • Conduct safety orientation and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
  • Provide leadership, training, and conflict resolution on the job site.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Understanding of highway construction, including underground piping and excavation.
  • Proficient in operating various earthmoving machinery.
  • Skilled in multitasking and managing time effectively under pressure.
  • Experience in scheduling, ordering, field supervision, safety management, and quality control in civil construction.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to manage and resolve conflicts.

Physical Demands:

  • Regular physical effort, including standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to walk and stand intermittently on construction sites.
  • Frequent climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and pushing/pulling objects.
  • Capability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier weights.
  • Good manual dexterity and coordination.
  • Able to hear and respond to verbal instructions in a noisy environment.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a Service Foreman in heavy highway construction or equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Work Environment:
Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Exposure to heavy machinery, moving parts, and various substances found on construction sites is common. Noise levels may range from moderate to loud.
