General Summary:

Under the close guidance of a certified educator, the Instructional Assistant works with individual students or small groups identified as having disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The primary aim is to provide essential physical, emotional, and academic support, enabling these students to derive maximum benefit from their specialized educational programs. The role also involves assisting teachers with various classroom activities.

Essential Functions:
  • Support and uphold the mission, vision, and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Engage effectively with students, educators, administrators, colleagues, and all stakeholders.
  • Create a safe, supportive, positive, and productive learning environment.
  • Assist educators with primary academic instruction and classroom activities; prepare and distribute materials for educational tasks.
  • Support physical health initiatives for students, including activities such as physical therapy and assisting with exercises.
  • As needed, aid educators in teaching daily living skills, including personal hygiene, mobility, and self-care.
  • Reinforce speech therapy lessons as appropriate.
  • Adjust special equipment for student use as necessary.
  • Maintain an organized and tidy classroom environment.
  • Address basic first aid needs of students.
  • Ensure confidentiality of student information.
  • Assist with basic computer instruction as required.
  • Monitor and check students' assistive devices for proper functioning.
  • Perform simple tasks for students as needed, such as sharpening pencils or carrying lunch trays.
  • Assist educators in transporting students to various activities.
  • Participate in all required professional meetings and training sessions.
  • Manage inventory of instructional materials and technology tools needed for daily use; ensure safe storage and proper usage of all materials.
  • Utilize personal computing devices and software applications for managing relevant information and communication.
  • Operate general office equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Work Experience:
  • Two-year degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited institution, or a passing score on the Para Pro examination; prior experience working with children is preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge/Skills:

Familiarity with the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district relevant to the specific duties of the position. Understanding of the special needs of students identified under IDEA. Knowledge of the maintenance and operation of equipment commonly used by students with disabilities. Ability to provide supplemental instruction through explanation, demonstration, or supervised practice. Capability to assist educators in various classroom and instructional activities. Ability to effectively support students in personal health and hygiene tasks. Proficiency in preparing materials for classroom activities. Knowledge of record-keeping, forms, and reports that must be maintained. Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and employee information. Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of special education and office equipment. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, colleagues, educators, students, and the public.

Working Conditions:

Responsibilities are primarily conducted in a classroom setting with minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions. The role requires constant attention while working with students and interacting with various adults. Physical demands may include occasional lifting or moving of items up to fifty pounds. Occasional travel may be required; overnight travel is not necessary.

Responsibility:

Supervises students in classrooms, labs, and other instructional areas as assigned.

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated annually according to the school board's policy on the evaluation of support personnel.
