As the Lead Customs Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for managing the classification and U.S. Customs clearance of substantial merchandise, overseeing an annual duty expenditure. Your role will involve collaboration with various departments to ensure adherence to CBP regulations and other governmental requirements. You will provide training, maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), and keep abreast of industry developments. Key responsibilities include identifying HTS codes, assessing additional duties or tariffs, conducting regular audits, and resolving any Customs and Border Protection (CBP) holds. It is essential to ensure precision in importing requirements and compliance with relevant regulations.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Ensure precision in classifications, duty rates, and clearance documentation while upholding compliance with CBP and other regulatory agencies. Train new team members, update job aids, SOPs, and training materials, and collaborate with management to enhance processes.
- Maintain compliance within the Trade Compliance Program through risk-based audits, identifying and mitigating potential risks.
- Develop and test a cross-functional International Purchase Order system to streamline operations, minimize risk, and enhance efficiency.
- Generate reports on Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), Anti-Dumping/Countervailing Duties (AD/CVD) cases, and tariff changes, identifying potential risks or savings opportunities, and keep management informed of significant duty alterations.
- Work closely with Customs Brokers and the Center of Excellence for classification and regulatory updates. Stay informed on industry trends through conferences, webinars, and meetings, and disseminate knowledge to relevant teams and management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or a minimum of three years of direct experience in Customs Trade Compliance.
- Licenses/Certification/Registration: US Customs Broker License and/or CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) preferred.
- Experience in international operations and customs compliance, with a strong understanding of U.S. Import Regulations as they pertain to the company’s processes and commodities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of International Supply Chain dynamics.
- Proficient in researching, understanding, and interpreting the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule and binding rulings.
- Strong prioritization skills and the ability to communicate status and impacts effectively.
- Well-versed in international rules and regulations related to the importation of goods into the U.S.
- Capable of managing projects alongside daily responsibilities with increased accountability.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Teams.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and a collaborative team player with a positive attitude and a drive for success.
