The Patient Financial Access Specialist is tasked with overseeing all functions related to patient financial access, while also providing assistance with intricate scheduling across multiple outpatient service areas. This role requires effective communication and adept use of technology to perform various duties, including accurate patient identification in compliance with safety protocols. The specialist is responsible for collecting and updating patients' demographic and financial data through various computer systems to ensure efficient processing of patient visits.

This position serves as a vital link between patients and healthcare providers, managing the scheduling of appointments and procedures for both internal and external patients. The specialist collaborates closely with patients, physicians, and nursing professionals, ensuring that complex procedures, physician appointments, and other multifaceted services are accurately sequenced. Direct communication with patients and physician offices is essential to confirm that all necessary preparations and laboratory tests are completed prior to appointments.

Key responsibilities include coordinating multiple patient appointments and managing insurance demographics to guarantee appropriate reimbursement for services rendered. The specialist is also responsible for making informed decisions regarding exams to meet medical necessity criteria and following up with patients or physicians when necessary documentation is required. A strong awareness of various imaging and satellite locations is crucial for aligning appointments with patient needs.

Attention to detail, accuracy, and a high level of patient sensitivity are paramount in this role. The specialist is expected to embody the principles of Service Excellence, representing Yale New Haven Health positively at all times. Additional responsibilities include performing statistical and quality assurance functions, contributing to the development of new procedures, and participating in the planning and training of system enhancements to improve departmental operations.

Responsibilities

1. Patient Throughput: Ensures that all necessary information from referring physicians is provided to third-party payers for reimbursement. 2. Insurance: Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of various insurance options and accurately enters insurance information to meet billing requirements. 3. Complex Appointment Scheduling: Coordinates and supports patient appointment scheduling tasks. 4. Resource Management/Quality Assurance: Collaborates with management to provide support across outpatient service departments. 5. Customer Service: Upholds service excellence standards to ensure a positive patient experience. 6. Template Management: Works with clinical staff to maintain scheduling templates within the system. 7. Additional Duties: Reviews and updates training materials and provides training to staff as needed. Qualifications

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 2-3 years of experience in a customer service role, preferably in a healthcare setting with a focus on registration, scheduling, and medical insurance.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Self-motivated, organized, and team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills. Ability to multitask and adapt to changing volumes. Proficient in critical thinking and problem-solving. Intermediate computer skills and ability to train others effectively.
