Company Overview

Battelle oversees the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) program, funded entirely by the National Science Foundation. This extensive project, spanning over 30 years, aims to understand the effects of climate change, land use, and invasive species on ecology. Our scientists and engineers collect a wide array of ecological data across 20 eco-climatic domains that represent various US ecosystems. Utilizing advanced technology, including airborne observation platforms for capturing regional landscapes and vegetation, mobile and fixed data collection sites equipped with automated ground sensors, and trained field crews for observing and sampling diverse organisms, we gather crucial data on soil and water. Following data collection, a state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure will calibrate, store, and publish this information. The Observatory employs over 500 personnel and is pioneering in its ability to detect and forecast ecological changes on a continental scale.

Job Summary

The role involves the design, implementation, support, and optimization of data collection, storage, and access for the NEON program. Under general supervision, the individual will assess business requirements, analyze and organize raw data, construct data systems and pipelines, and enhance data quality. This position offers the flexibility of being fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts advanced data analysis and modeling, along with physical and logical design.
  • Implements complex data warehouse architecture.
  • Engages in database development tasks, including query optimization and schema design.
  • Performs database administration duties such as backups, restores, maintenance, and security configurations.
  • Contributes to the establishment of procedures and standards for database development.
  • Identifies opportunities to enhance data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
  • Prepares data for predictive and prescriptive modeling.
  • Assists in integrating databases with other applications and infrastructure components.
  • Conducts needs assessments and evaluates new technologies to improve and maintain core and enterprise infrastructure.
  • Collaborates with external vendors as necessary to resolve complex issues or bugs.
  • Provides occasional after-hours support.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience as a Data Engineer/Data Analyst or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in database environments, particularly PostgreSQL.
  • Familiarity with the Trino query engine.
  • Experience with Apache Hive data warehouse software.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python and Java.
  • Experience with Git and CI/CD methodologies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve intricate database and software issues.
  • Skilled in documenting all technical designs and solutions effectively.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a Google Cloud environment, including CloudSQL and GKE.
  • Familiarity with MySQL, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle databases.
  • Experience in a scientific research setting.
  • Knowledge of automation practices.
Salary

$83,000 - $155,000 (Dependent on experience)
