Job Overview

Position Summary:

The primary objective of this role is to deliver permitting services for oversized and/or overweight vehicle transporters, ensuring adherence to federal and state safety regulations. This position plays a crucial role in facilitating safe travel across Indiana's highways while protecting infrastructure and preventing the authorization of unsafe vehicles or unsuitable routes.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate and process permit applications for standard oversized/overweight vehicle movements, confirming compliance with federal highway laws and state regulations.
  2. Review and process company agreement submissions to verify the company’s standing at both state and federal levels.
  3. Assess and process requests for special weight registrations.
  4. Maintain and update routing information daily to reflect current road restrictions, detours, and closures.
  5. Communicate with carriers through various channels to authorize permits, provide regulatory guidance, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and resolve issues.
  6. Assist customers through multiple communication methods at the Customer Service Center.
  7. Collaborate with law enforcement and enforcement divisions to coordinate compliance efforts.
  8. Work with district office engineers to coordinate superload routes and ensure accurate road restriction information is communicated.

Qualifications:

Candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with two years of post-secondary education in business, communications, or a related field. Alternatively, two years of experience as a Program Coordinator 5 with the Department of Revenue may fulfill this requirement.

Skills Required:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • In-depth understanding of wheel and axle weight configurations per federal bridge standards.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various permit classes, vehicle configurations, and the specific requirements for each.
  • Proficient understanding of Indiana Code related to permitting and familiarity with Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess routes using state, bridge, and width maps, along with vehicle weight configurations.
  • Advanced knowledge of the ACD telephone system and ethics regarding confidentiality.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, with minimal exposure to excessive dust, noise, or temperature extremes. Regular use of a personal computer and video display terminals is expected.
