Job Summary

We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Automotive Technicians to join our award-winning team at the City of Chesapeake. As a key member of our fleet maintenance team, you will perform highly specialized maintenance, inspections, and repairs to our diverse fleet of automotive vehicles and small equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilize state-of-the-art OEM level diagnostic equipment to inspect, diagnose, repair, calibrate, and align automotive vehicles.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as building up, repairing, and changing tires.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on automotive vehicles, trailers, and small equipment.
  • Perform major repairs such as engine and transmission repair, overhaul, or exchange.
  • Perform service and repair of complex sub-assemblies in automotive vehicles.
  • Perform post-pursuit vehicle inspections on Public Safety vehicles.
  • May perform vehicle modifications such as installing or removing special equipment, lighting, or other modifications.
  • Perform Virginia safety inspections.
  • Perform shop or area maintenance such as general clean up around both the interior and exterior of the shop and property.
  • Prepare documentation such as work order notes, repairs completed, parts used, repair cost, and other information.
  • Provide advice, training, and assistance to vehicle or equipment operators as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience:
    • Automotive Technician I: One year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
    • Automotive Technician II: Two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
  • Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within probationary period.
  • Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
