Position Overview:
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and Maintenance Manager will spearhead the execution of EHS standards and protocols, providing expert guidance on EHS matters while collaborating with leadership on compliance, project oversight, reporting, and associated EHS management challenges.
This role is integral to the site leadership team, focusing on planning, EHS governance, auditing, management systems, sharing best practices, compliance initiatives, and regulatory reporting.
The primary objective of this position is to cultivate a safety culture that achieves exemplary EHS performance.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Champion a zero-injury safety culture: Lead and mentor at each site to establish and maintain a hazard-free workplace, promote safe work practices, and nurture a proactive safety culture that prioritizes employee safety as a core business value.
2. Implement lockout/tagout procedures and programs in accordance with industry standards.
3. Ensure compliance reporting for all environmental, health, and safety activities in alignment with federal (OSHA and EPA), state, and local EHS regulations.
4. Maintain EHS records and documentation control.
5. Provide daily support and direction in EHS programs for managers, supervisors, and employees to ensure a unified and effective approach.
6. Develop and communicate strategies to meet EHS objectives.
7. Create and execute plans to rectify or prevent losses and audit these plans for effectiveness.
8. Conduct proactive EHS audits and implement recommendations.
9. Identify potential environmental risks and formulate mitigation strategies to minimize incidents.
10. Ensure prompt investigation of environmental, health, and safety incidents, conduct root cause analyses, and implement corrective action plans.
11. Collaborate with HR management to oversee employee workers' compensation claims and work assignments.
12. Manage pollution and waste control initiatives.
13. Evaluate the safety of new processes and equipment.
14. Conduct or oversee testing of air quality and noise levels to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
15. Develop and deliver training programs to meet regulatory and operational requirements.
16. Assess EHS performance and work with relevant personnel to create recovery and improvement plans.
17. Establish goals, objectives, metrics, and scorecards to ensure the effectiveness of the EHS function.
18. Coordinate the identification of capital funding needs for EHS projects, ensuring that expenditures align with budget and timing constraints while achieving desired outcomes.
19. Develop, assess, and schedule regular emergency drills for scenarios such as fire evacuations, tornadoes, and active shooter situations.
20. Train forklift and crane operators to qualify for licensing.
21. Assist the Cleaning & Plating department with chemical inventory, storage, procurement, and related tasks.
22. Oversee all maintenance activities, including managing the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) program.
23. Collaborate with plant leadership to schedule maintenance personnel for machine repairs and upkeep based on business priorities.
Qualifications:
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in occupational health & safety management, environmental management, or a related field is preferred; a minimum of 10 years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing setting is required.
2. Experience in metals manufacturing is advantageous.
3. A high degree of personal integrity is essential.
4. Multi-site experience is preferred.
5. A dynamic leader with a proven track record of driving change initiatives; strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with individuals across all levels of the organization; ability to think strategically and critically analyze diverse information sources; proactive in taking initiative to achieve results; adept at applying situational leadership techniques as needed; skilled in evaluating personnel strengths and areas for improvement, with a focus on mentoring and coaching.
6. Comprehensive knowledge of EHS regulations and requirements in the relevant jurisdiction.
7. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; a team builder with a results-oriented mindset and the ability to influence staff organization-wide.
8. Action-oriented decision-maker.
9. Experience in supervising, leading, and developing EHS professionals.
10. Familiarity with process improvement methodologies such as Kaizen is a significant plus.
11. Strong emphasis on behavioral safety and employee engagement.
12. Capability to reconstruct the EHS Department from the ground up.
