Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Planning Manager, the Principal Planner will oversee and direct the activities of planning staff, acting as project manager and coordinator for current planning activities. This includes preparing and presenting staff reports, ordinance revisions, and providing technical planning and zoning assistance to the public and city departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and supervise planners and planning teams responsible for current planning activities, preparing and presenting staff reports, and providing technical planning and zoning assistance.
  • Process development and related land use permit applications, development plans, plats, and variance applications, ensuring compliance with established plans and ordinances.
  • Collaborate with the Planning Manager to lead, manage, and coordinate the recommendations of other departments, divisions, and groups in the review of zoning and development applications, long-range plans, and special reports.
Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of urban planning principles, including the ability to train staff.
  • Knowledge and experience related to comprehensive and neighborhood planning principles, GIS, and research methodology.
  • Proven skill in working with city employees, the public, consultants, and City Council, and presenting complex issues to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
  • Ability to evaluate subdivision plats, development plans, and zoning cases, and write reports that require limited editing.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in urban and regional planning, geography/GIS, or related field, plus six years of related experience, including one year of supervisory experience.
  • AICP certification required within two years of employment.
