Under the supervision of the Chief Counsel of the Office of the Director Legal Unit, the Attorney IV (Senior Counsel) plays a pivotal role in representing the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations, as well as division leaders and managers across various legal matters pertinent to the Department's jurisdiction. This position is designed for seasoned legal professionals who are adept at handling complex and sensitive legal issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent the Department and its Director in civil litigation, including cases involving constitutional matters.
  • Manage internal personnel legal issues and represent the Director in workers' compensation cases related to special funds.
  • Analyze public works coverage requests and draft decisions for review.
  • Serve as a hearing officer for appeals regarding prevailing wage violations.
  • Provide legal counsel on apprenticeship issues and analyze retaliation complaint investigations.
  • Offer insights and recommendations concerning Public Records Act requests and draft proposed legislation.
  • Handle contract-related legal services and draft necessary regulations.
  • Address a variety of legal challenges that arise in the Department's operations.

Work Environment

This position is a full-time role within an office setting. The work involves extensive use of computers for drafting legal documents, conducting research, and communication. Attorneys are expected to manage their own administrative tasks, with limited secretarial support. In-state travel may be required based on assignments.

Qualifications

  • Must be a member of the California Bar with a minimum of six years of legal practice experience.
  • Submission of a legal writing sample, not exceeding ten pages, is required.
