### Job Title: Optical Design Engineer

### Job Summary:

Western Digital is seeking a highly skilled Optical Design Engineer to join our research and development team. As an Optical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing optical systems for our Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology.

### Responsibilities:

* Design and develop optical systems, including planar waveguides, mode converters, laser diodes, and near-field transducers
* Characterize optical systems and initiate intellectual property development
* Publish and present scientific research

### Requirements:

* Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or closely related field
* Industrial experience is desired but not required
* Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: modeling of planar lightwave circuits, plasmonic devices, and optical characterization tools

### Skills:

* Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment
* Demonstrated ability to lead a project in research and/or advanced development
