Immediate Supervisor: Custodial Coordinator

Position Summary: The Custodian is tasked with ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of designated facilities, covering all areas including lounges, kitchens, restrooms, stairways, hallways, custodial closets, windows, doors, and walls. Proficiency in utilizing various cleaning agents and operating equipment such as vacuums and buffers is essential.

Work Assignments and Schedules:

Custodians may be allocated to different buildings, projects, and schedules as required, with the understanding that assignments may change as necessary.

Start times for the first shift may range from 5 AM to 7 AM, based on the needs of the assigned facility, concluding between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM.

Custodial Responsibilities:

Perform daily cleaning tasks to ensure that the facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition.

  • Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, and ledges.
  • Sanitize restroom fixtures, hardware, partitions, and floors.
  • Clean windows and mirrors in restrooms and entryways.
  • Maintain floors through sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing as scheduled.
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Wash and dust walls and ceilings.
  • Keep hallways, stairways, and elevators clean.
  • Manage the cleanliness of building entrances.
  • Dispose of waste properly and ensure trash receptacles are relined.
  • Maintain cleanliness in work areas and store equipment appropriately.
  • Assist in setting up tables and chairs for meetings as directed.

Staff Development:

Participate in departmental meetings and in-service educational programs as required.

Safety and Sanitation:

Ensure that all work areas are kept clean, safe, and visually appealing.

Read labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all cleaning products before use.

Report any facility damage through the designated work order system.

Equipment and Supply Management:

Ensure that all cleaning equipment is cleaned and stored properly at the end of each shift.

Assist colleagues in lifting heavy items as needed.

Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning materials in janitorial closets and inform the supervisor of any supply shortages.

Clean work and supply carts as directed.

Qualifications Required:

Current indoor masking is mandatory. COVID-19 vaccinations are required for all faculty, staff, and students, with accommodations available.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Ability to read, write, and comprehend written instructions and labels.

Willingness to adhere to safety protocols and use personal protective equipment.

After training, the ability to work independently is essential.

Maintain a professional appearance at all times.

A valid Michigan driver's license and a driving record compliant with College policies are necessary.

Dependability, flexibility, and teamwork are critical attributes.

Ability to work assigned hours, including occasional weekends or evenings.

Physical capability to navigate between campus buildings and perform active tasks for an eight-hour shift, including walking, standing, bending, and lifting cleaning equipment and supplies.
