Under the guidance of the Program Manager, the Substance Abuse Counseling Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the performance of Counselors and Interns. This role ensures that the treatment program delivers high-quality clinical services. The Supervisor will monitor the development of programs at the facility and maintain the current level of service offerings. This position is also accountable for the professional growth and training of supervisees, involving direct care tasks such as assessments, group sessions, education, and case management. In certain instances, this role may encompass 50% responsibilities related to Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) duties and 50% supervisory functions.

Key Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are typical for this position. They are not intended to be exhaustive or exclusive. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

  • Supervise counseling staff and assist with client case management for those admitted to the program.
  • Conduct screenings and interviews to determine client suitability for program admission.
  • Exhibit proficiency in areas outlined under alcohol and drug counselor qualifications.
  • Provide continuous education and training for all staff members.
  • Review and approve all progress notes, treatment plans, transfers, and termination documents for ADC Trainees and interns.
  • Facilitate weekly supervision meetings.
  • Participate in monthly management meetings and stay updated on all licensure requirements.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and daily reports.

Essential Qualifications

  • Current Minnesota State Licensure as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in providing individual and group counseling for individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Thorough understanding of all rules, regulations, and requirements pertinent to the assigned program.
  • A minimum of two years free from chemical abuse issues.
  • Documentation of 12 hours of training in co-occurring mental health issues and chemical dependency, covering competencies in philosophy, screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, documentation, programming, medication, collaboration, mental health consultation, and discharge planning.
  • Ongoing training in cultural awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultural norms and values.
  • Certification in CPR and first aid.
  • Proficient in computer use.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts in a straightforward manner.
  • Ability to engage with individuals from various cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Adaptability to accommodate a range of changing priorities.
  • Competence in drafting emails, memos, and reports using computer software.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, approximately 80% of the time.
  • Occasional lifting and reaching for client files, weighing up to 5 lbs., about 10% of the time.
  • Frequent data entry on a computer, approximately 25% of the time.
  • Regular handling of paperwork and writing tasks.
