About the Job


This administrative support role at the Chesapeake Public Defender Office offers a unique opportunity to work in the public sector, supporting lawyers and investigators in delivering high-quality legal services. As a Legal Assistant, you will be responsible for various tasks that keep our office running smoothly.



About the Role



  • Provide administrative and clerical support to attorneys, investigators, and mitigation specialists.
  • Greet visitors, answer phone calls, and schedule appointments.
  • Type, edit, and review memos, letters, and other documents.
  • Maintain filing systems and manage mail.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and judicial system personnel.


Requirements



  • You have experience using Microsoft applications like Word and Excel, as well as Google Suite.
  • You have skills in keyboarding and are familiar with creating and managing electronic and manual filing systems.
  • You possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and can work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • You have the ability to empathize with clients and their support networks, communicating effectively and compassionately.
  • Prior experience within the criminal justice system is considered an asset, and fluency in Spanish is highly valued.

Compensation


We offer a competitive salary of approximately $43,500 per year, commensurate with experience, plus opportunities for professional growth and development within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Employment is contingent upon passing a fingerprint-based background check and being authorized to work in the U.S.
