Key Responsibilities

  • Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
    1. Consistently follows all Health, Safety, and Environmental guidelines established by Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc.
    2. Ensures a secure environment for all personnel, clients, and visitors.
  • Operational Excellence & Best Practices
    1. Diagnoses and rectifies faulty or defective components in machinery and equipment.
    2. Maintains and repairs the operational state of industrial production and processing machinery.
    3. Reassembles equipment post-inspection, testing, or repair.
    4. Operates newly serviced machinery to confirm the effectiveness of repairs.
    5. Documents all maintenance and repair activities.
    6. Replaces damaged or worn-out parts as necessary.
    7. Tests mechanical products and equipment post-repair to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications.
    8. Performs routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and lubricating equipment and vehicles.
    9. Interprets operating manuals, blueprints, and technical schematics.
    10. Utilizes diagnostic tools to identify malfunctions and determine necessary repairs.
  • Special Assignments
    1. Provides support throughout the facility as required.
    2. Completes special projects as directed.
Internal Control Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the company's internal control framework by understanding, communicating, and adhering to established controls, while also suggesting improvements to policies and procedures.
  • Reports operational issues, noncompliance with conduct codes, or other policy violations to management.
Interpersonal Relations

This position involves direct interaction with the Maintenance Supervisor and operational staff, primarily through face-to-face communication.

Work Environment

Regular exposure to varying weather conditions is expected. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and debris are present due to the nature of the work environment. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety footwear, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields, is mandatory to mitigate these risks.

Managing multiple safety and maintenance concerns can create pressure. Workloads may vary unpredictably, with heightened stress during peak periods. Adherence to critical deadlines necessitates flexibility. Interruptions to workflow and irregular work schedules are common. Overtime may be required, including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements

Ability to: stand for extended periods; lift and carry heavy items up to 100 pounds occasionally; crouch or bend to enhance visibility; reach overhead; twist and turn; walk on uneven surfaces; handle tools and components consistently; communicate effectively. Visual acuity for detailed work and mental agility for independent tasks with a focus on precision are essential.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is required. A minimum of 5 years of experience supporting skilled trades in heavy equipment repair and maintenance is essential. Candidates with an Associate's degree in Heavy Duty Truck or Heavy Equipment Repair and 2 years of relevant experience may also be considered. A valid driver's license is required for this position.
