Job Summary

University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health is seeking a skilled Patient Care Technician-3 East Cardiac to join our team. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide direct patient care, taking vital signs, checking surgical dressings, and assisting patients with activities of daily living.

Responsibilities
  • Perform testing and manage patient care based on results and clinical findings.
  • Record patient care along the continuum, including activities of daily living (ADLs): feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, and transferring.
  • Complete, document, and report patient vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, and reported pain level).
  • Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Participate in cost-effective strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Promote patient safety, including fall prevention, and ensure the safety of the clinical environment for patients, visitors, and other staff members.
  • Maintain order and appearance of patient rooms and work area, and maintain patient care supplies and linen.
  • Provide post-mortem care.
  • Collaborate with members of the healthcare team to carry out the plan of care, including reporting observed changes in patients' condition.
  • Ensure patient comfort relative to their pain status.
  • Measure and document dietary intake and patient urinary and stool output, and document calorie count.
  • Measure and document patient weight.
  • Conduct indwelling urinary catheter care, apply, maintain, and remove external urinary catheter devices.
  • Conduct blood glucose monitoring.
  • Provide wound care to promote healing and maintain structural integrity of the skin, perform skin care and hygiene, and report impaired skin integrity and/or wound impairment.
  • Assist with collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing, incorporating proper techniques for patient identification, method for collection of appropriate specimen(s), and documentation.
  • Provide orthopedic/rehab device care, e.g., braces, splints, CPM, dons/doffs compression wraps/stockings.
  • Participate in hourly patient rounding in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Respond to patient-triggered alarms, including call light, chair alarm, bed alarm, tele-sitter alarm, etc.
  • Comply with The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals within scope of practice.
  • Detect, report, and act to avoid or correct safety risks, report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Provide professional vigilance to assigned patients, including when assigned as a patient safety companion.
  • Incorporate safe lifting techniques and body mechanics in daily practice.
  • Improve patient flow and prevent care delays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Maryland state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) required.
  • No previous experience required; previous direct patient care experience in a healthcare facility preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
