UPMC is seeking a skilled Phlebotomy Specialist to join their Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology in Penn Hills. This unique specialty office provides fertility care to individuals in the area, and UPMC is the department to offer these services.


As a Phlebotomy Specialist, you will be responsible for blood draws, rooming, chaperoning procedures, making calls to patients for intake/history, scanning, and other patient care support duties.


Hours for this position will be Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 3:00pm, with rotating weekends. No evenings required. Previous phlebotomy or medical assistant experience is preferred, but not required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Following proper patient identification procedures, procure appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick.
  • Instruct patients on the collection procedures for laboratory specimens that are obtained by the patient, and may collect samples other than blood.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Transport specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, including hand hygiene techniques and proper isolation precautions.
  • Perform related clerical duties, and utilize various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enter test orders, receive, cancel, charge, and credit tests, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
  • Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel, and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • May also perform arterial puncture following strict collection and post-collection guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; use materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.


Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
