Clinical Nurse Specialist - Oncology

KEY FUNCTIONS

Patient Assessment/Intervention/Evaluation/Performance of Diagnostic/Therapeutic Procedures:
Deliver high-quality patient care tailored to the patient's diagnosis, treatment plan, age, development, and other specific needs. Clearly communicate findings to patients, their families, and the healthcare team.


Conduct comprehensive health assessments, including medical history, physical examinations, and psychosocial evaluations, and provide verbal recommendations for healthcare and preventive measures based on the results.

Daily rounds on inpatient services should be performed for each patient, with findings communicated to the attending physician.

Ability to accurately review records, validate findings, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in the delivery of care as necessary.


Monitor and analyze laboratory, clinical, radiographic, and procedural data for both ambulatory and inpatient services, developing appropriate care plans in preparation for assessment and treatment of each patient.


Evaluate findings from medical history, laboratory results, and radiographic data, and collaborate with physicians for further diagnostic and therapeutic management.


Proactively prevent, minimize, and manage symptoms, toxicities, and health issues related to diseases or treatments in partnership with physicians and other healthcare professionals.


Assess patient responses to treatments and healthcare interventions, modifying care as necessary (under physician supervision for medical acts).

Provide emotional support to patients and their families.

Deliver healthcare throughout the entire disease continuum: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative care, and cancer prevention or complication management.

Facilitate the utilization of institutional and agency resources.


Coordinate consultations, diagnostic procedures, and ensure patient convenience in scheduling, in collaboration with the attending physician.

Prescribe medications (if eligible) as necessary.

Provide triage in an outpatient setting to ensure consistent patient care.


Assist with data entry and retrieval of patient information, and prepare or dictate patient letters, notes, progress notes, and consultation notes.

Authorize chemotherapy orders under physician supervision or verify orders written by physicians. The Clinical Nurse Specialist may prescribe other therapeutic agents as permitted by the institution.

Educator/Consultant/Research/Non-Essential:
Provide general health education to patients and their families.

Engage in formal and informal training of nursing students, professional nurses, and other healthcare providers.


Stay updated by participating in continuing education programs relevant to the clinical area and the Clinical Nurse Specialist's certification, reviewing literature, engaging in professional nursing organizations, and disseminating advancements in nursing practice or healthcare through publications and presentations.

Assist in creating educational materials for staff or patients.

Attend departmental meetings relevant to the Advanced Practice Provider.

Apply relevant research to enhance patient care and evidence-based practices.

Contribute to departmental research efforts by assisting with protocol accrual or trials.

Provide consultation to colleagues and allied health personnel.

Collaborate with medical, nursing, and other disciplines regarding care plans, follow-up, and evaluations.

Recommend therapeutic interventions for symptom relief.

Contribute to departmental research initiatives and apply pertinent research findings to clinical practice.

Identify clinical issues suitable for research methodologies.

Initiate or collaborate on research projects.

Assist with the implementation of departmental research protocols.

Engage in professional activities (research, presentations, publications, etc.) and perform additional duties as required.

EDUCATION

Required:
A Master's Degree in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice.

May be waived for applicants who received recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to a specified date.

Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must align with the clinical practice area and patient population.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:
Previous experience as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

Preferred:
Previous experience in Oncology nursing.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

All of the following:

Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP).

Related authorization must align with the clinical practice area and patient population.

Basic Life Support (BLS).

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

If working in the following departments:

MAY BE REQUIRED:
Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
