Job Summary: The role of a Psychiatrist specializing in Autism Services encompasses the clinical oversight and expert guidance necessary for the development, execution, and assessment of all Autism-related programs and services. This includes a 20-bed inpatient unit dedicated to children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder and significant behavioral challenges, a partial hospitalization program, and an outpatient autism clinic. The position reports directly to the Chief of Psychiatry and collaborates closely with the Autism Leadership Team to provide care for patients within the Autism programs.
Qualifications:
- Mandatory: Board certification by the ABPN in Psychology.
- Mandatory: Licensed by the State of Connecticut.
- Mandatory: Current Affiliate Membership with the Hospital for Special Care Medical Staff.
- Preferred: Minimum of 3 years of experience in managing autism services.
- Mandatory: Proficiency in addressing the psychiatric and psychological needs of autism patients.
Physical Requirements:
The role necessitates the ability to remain seated for extended periods while observing and listening to patients and staff, with occasional walking and standing. The ability to lift and/or push/pull up to 20 pounds may be required. Gross grasping and fine manipulation skills are essential.
Cognitive Demands:
- Independent problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and adaptability to new environments and information are crucial.
- Strong writing skills with attention to detail and adherence to professional standards are required.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to express complex ideas and engage in active listening, are necessary.
- Ability to understand abstract concepts and make inferences, along with familiarity with medical and psychological terminology, is essential.
Work Environment:
This position primarily involves working within the hospital, particularly on patient units, which may expose the individual to various environmental conditions, including noise and potential hazards. On-call duties are required, contributing to the coverage schedules for patient care needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct treatment to patients and/or their families as needed.
- Engage in family conferences for referred patients when clinically appropriate.
- Provide on-call services in coordination with department providers.
- Facilitate team meetings focused on patient care within the program.
- Offer clinically relevant education to staff, graduate students, residents, and fellows.
- Continuously seek opportunities for process enhancement in patient care, supporting the organization's commitment to high reliability.
- Collaborate with medical staff physicians and actively participate in Medical Staff Committee meetings.
- Advocate for autism services within the community and provide necessary education to stakeholders.
- Engage in ongoing education relevant to the hospital's mission.
- Maintain compliance with charting, billing, and mandatory training requirements.
